Sunday School Lesson

Teaching the gospels to young children is no easy task. As a Sunday school teacher, it is your job to find ways to simplify such big concepts and explain them in a way that little ones can grasp. This might seem a little overwhelming, but remember the Scripture: “Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” We are all children under His Word. Use this verse as inspiration while you plan your lessons for these precious souls. If you need a little help, here are some activities to use and modify for your Sunday school classes.

Dance and Music

Christian musical organization The Way International agrees that Psalm 98:4 encourages us to sing: “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.” This is convenient when teaching young children because they love music! Find songs that relate to your lesson and teach them to your class. Give them instruments like maracas and tambourines to make their joyful noises. The best part of singing these songs is that kids will get the message without even realizing that they are learning! There is no shortage of classic songs to sing, but some suggestions include:

  • Jesus Loves Me
  • This Little Light of Mine
  • The Arky, Arky Song
  • Lord, I Lift Your Name on High
  • I’ve Got the Joy Joy Joy Joy Down in my Heart

Arts and Crafts

Romans 12:2 tells us “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Using this Scripture as inspiration, help young ones to create art based on Bible teachings. Plan art projects for your students to help illustrate the message of the lesson. Some ideas might be:

  • Teach children the 10 Commandments by painting their hands and making handprints on paper. Give them pre-printed cutouts of each of the Commandments and let them glue them onto each finger.
  • Print out a clipart cross and write “He died for” across the top. Let each child write their name in the center of their cross and decorate it with various art supplies. This can be an effective teaching tool for Easter.
  • Remind children of God’s endless love by having them make a collage of multicolored paper hearts. Print out Scriptures related to His love and let children include them on their collage. This can be an individual project or a large collage that the whole class contributes to.
  • Make a paper plate fish to represent the story of Jonah. Print or make little paper doll “Jonahs” and cut them out ahead of time. Let children paint a paper plate, then cut out a triangle for the mouth. Glue the triangle at the end of the plate for a “tail,” and let them glue their Jonah inside the fish’s belly.

Sunday school is an important time in young children’s lives. It is a time where their faith is nurtured and fed and can blossom into something much bigger and more glorious as their lives go on.
