TRAI Expects To Finish Most Meetings In 2–3 Months

TRAI, the telecom regulator that is planning on important problems such as data privacy framework and spectrum pricing in telecom segment, expects to finalize its suggestions on most of the meetings in 2–3 Months, a top executive has claimed to the media in an interview.

“The current meetings will be completed in 2–3 Months. I think, the open meeting will mostly be finished in couple of months,” RS Sharma, Chairman of TRAI, claimed to the media in an interview. On the other hand, he did not said on timelines for particular meetings. Sharma additionally claimed that the discussion paper of the regulator on “residual problems” pertaining to OTT (over the top) offerings will be rolled out in a timeframe of a months.

OTT points to services and applications that are available over the web and ride on networks of the operator providing Internet authorization offerings such as search engines, social networks, and video aggregation websites. Huge telecom service providers as well as their alliance COAI have been broadcasting the principle of “same service same rules” for shareholders comprising OTT communications operators, who provide messaging or voice telephony offerings akin to that of telecom companies.

Telecom companies have also quarrel that the strict rules of data protection applicable on them must also apply “uniformly and equally” on other companies such as OTT apps. While the discussion paper on OTT is in progress, the current consultation papers of the regulator (that includes problems, which are below its evaluation but where suggestions are awaited) span regions such as security, privacy, and ownership of the information in telecom segment.

The papers will also look into marketing domestic telecom equipment production, and review of UCC (Unsolicited Commercial Communication) system, among others. Other problems are also being discussed as per the media reports and sources.
