At the recently concluded All India Congress Committee meeting held in Delhi that was attended by Manmohan Singh, party president Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi along with other top party leaders, Mrs. Gandhi stated that PM Modi’s declarations of combating corruption, carrying out development works are only “dramatic words”. She called for a cooperative effort wherein all like-minded political parties could get together and find out a workable program to combat BJP in forthcoming elections. Referring to the Shimla resolution of 2003 that had helped the Congress led UPA alliance give a strong defeat to BJP’s NDA alliance. During the plenary’s second day session the party’s theme was “time for change” that also signaled shift of responsibilities to younger generation with Rahul Gandhi at the reins.
Addressing the meeting, party president Rahul Gandhi stated that members of new Congress Working Committee will have both young and old members as a sign that the party is willing to embrace change without disengaging from its legacy and roots. The new committee set two resolutions for the party to follow which were suggested by veterans Mallikarjun Kharge and Captain Amarinder Singh while several new leaders gave their suggestions and took active part in endorsing these resolutions.
The resolutions were related to political behavior and agriculture along with creation of employment and elevating poverty. Several senior leaders took center-stage to bring an end to internal bickering between party members that were more intent on pulling each other down instead of standing together to fight against ills of society. At the 82nd plenary session of the Congress party both the former and current presidents requested party workers to work hard and spread message of unity and brotherhood as the current ruling party was focused on spreading hatred and anger among people and separating them along religious lines.
